Baron's racer Philodryas baroni
Baron's racers are a rear-fanged, arboreal species whose
range is mainly located in Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay. They are still
relatively rare in US collections, though more are being imported as of
late. We were lucky enough to acquire a couple pairs of U.S.C.B. specimens
from a pair that has been in captivity for many years. Their upturned
rostrum and flat green coloration make these snakes fairly unique. They
are great captives, readily accepting pinkie mice as a first meal and
requiring no special treatment to thrive.
These amazing snakes are a little more high-strung than most of the species
that we work with but rarely show any aggression other than when food
is present. Being from a family of rear-fanged snakes that have caused
some severe envenomations, caution must be taken when working with them.
Most documented cases of P.baroni bites report localized swelling and
pain; there are no documented cases of death from a P. baroni bite. Adults
usually reach lengths of 4-5 feet, though 6 feet is not unheard of.
